In order to produce a light, but still sensitive blade such as the Tibhar IV-L Balsa, one needs a well thought out and special structure. To enable a weight as low as 70 g, this TT blade has 6 plies in total, whereas the core veneer (core ply) is made of balsa and ocoumé. Both woods perfectly complement each other.
Balsa is a tree which is native to neo-tropical regions (South America, Central America, and the West Indies). It reaches a height of approx. 50 m, whereas its trunk has a diameter of up to 2 m. Balsa exhibits is very light (density 130 kg/m3), not very strong (Young´s modulus: 2,600 N/mm2), and soft (Janka hardness: 88). You can see that this wood is perfect to reduce weight considering the Tibhar IV-L Balsa. Ocoumé (a.k.a. angouma, or gaboon) is native to equatorial West Africa (Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Rio Muni). This hardwood tree grows to 30-40 m tall, with a trunk diameter of 1-2.5 m (above the often large basal buttresses). Oucomé is harder, heavier, and stronger than Balsa, which pronounces that the IV-L Balsa is rather an allround instead of a defensive blade. However, Ocoumé is lighter and softer compared to e.g. mahogany. This highlights its suitability as an allround (rather than an offensive) blade.
