Edge Tapes - to keep everything together

Edge tapes are applied to protect the outer area of the table tennis racket. During the assembly of the table tennis racket, the blade and rubbers are coated with so-called table tennis glue. Once the glue has dried, the rubber is placed on the blade and trimmed. The adhesive effect between the rubber and the blade is further enhanced by the edge tape. Additionally, it protects the rubbers from chipping due to porous rubber residues (natural wear).

What sizes are available for table tennis edge tapes?

Table tennis edge tape is most commonly purchased in a length of 5m. However, depending on the manufacturer, there are also lengths of 0.5m and 50m. The smallest unit of only 0.5m fits just one racket and is therefore rarely used, as it is also less attractive in terms of price. If you order a racket from our TT-Shop, we generally include an edge tape. Nevertheless, it can be useful to get a replacement edge tape.

Table Tennis Edge Tape - What width is suitable for my racket?

On average, a table tennis blade is about 0.5cm thick. Based on the dimensions of the blade, the sizes of the edge tapes suitable for the respective racket are determined. For example, if table tennis pips without sponge are used, the narrowest tape in our shop from Donic, which is only 6 mm, is recommended. Since most players use pips-in rubbers on both sides, the following recommendations apply:

  • 6 mm suitable for OX pips (custom-made Donic)
  • 9 mm suitable for thin rubbers (1.5 to 1.8 mm)
  • 10 mm (1.6 to 1.9 mm)
  • 11 mm (custom-made Sauer and Tröger)
  • 12 mm (from 2.0 mm)
  • 15 mm (from 2.2 mm)
If, like many players, you play 2.0 mm on the forehand and 1.8 mm on the backhand, the edge tape with a thickness of 12 mm fits almost perfectly. For most other size combinations, deviations in the millimeter range are to be expected.
