There is much effort, development, and research necessary in order to equip a blade as light as the Tibhar Chila Off with the desired gaming properties it now presents. The result is a very nice table tennis blade, consisting of five thoroughly chosen veneers (wood types: Abachi and Balsa), which are bonded together using a special gluing technique.
The core veneer is made of balsa wood. Balsa is a tree growing in neo-tropical regions (South America, Central America, and the West Indies), reaching a height of approx. 50 m, and a trunk diameter of about 2 m. Balsa is extremely light (density 130 kg/m3), not very strong (Young´s modulus: 2,600 N/mm2), and very soft (Janka hardness: 88). As you can see, this wood is perfect to reduce weight. On the other hand, its softness causes very pleasant gaming properties such as a good control, much safety, or much feedback. Speking of offensiveness. The medium and outer plies are made of Ayous (also known as Abachi, or Samba). Abachi grows in tropical areas, such as West Africa, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, etc. The tree reaches a height of 50 m, and a trunk diameter of approx. 1.5 m. Ayous is way heavier (350 kg/m3), stronger (Young´s modulus: 6,800 N/mm2), and significantly harder (Janka hardness: 430) than Balsa. This results in an increased overall speed, very positive effects on the spin development, and a dangerous counter behavior since the bounce of the ball is quite flat. These properties are advantageous for rotational topspins. The Chila Off also provides much pressure and a very direct ball contact. This makes it easier for you to start attacks after playing passive blocks. There are also many reports of positive experience when using balsa-ayous combinations. Such blades are very popular!
