The veneers of a table tennis are responsible for its properties (in addition to the skills of the player, of course). For the Stiga Legacy Carbon, the following wood types are used: Abachi, Limba, and Pine.
Abachi (a.k.a. Ayous, Obeche, or Samba) is a tree which grows in tropical regions of West Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, and so on. Ayous trees reach a height of 50 m, and exhibit a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 m. Ayous wood is relatively light (350 kg/m3), medium-strong (Young´s modulus: 6,800 N/mm2), and medium-hard (Janka hardness: 430). As table tennis veneer, Ayous is well-known for its positive gaming properties. The moderate heaviness and moderate hardness induce a pleasant feedback and feeling of the ball. This is particularly important during passive blocks, the short-short play, and during long ball rallies.
Limba is a tree usually native to regions south of the equator. The trees exhibit a height of up to 45 m, and their trunk reach a diameter of up to about 1.5 m. Limba is medium-hard (Janka hardness: 430), medium-dense (520 kg/m3), and quite strong (Young´s modulus: 9,400 N/mm2). Furthermore, Limba is known as a topspin wood, which is also quite fast, but not very elastic / springy. Also, Limba has a soft feeling, a soft touch, and quite a bit of control.
Pines are coniferous trees belonging to the family of pines, which grow in the northern hemispheres. One species very common in Middle Europe is the black pine (Pinus nigra), reaching an age of up to 800 years, and a height of 50 m (2,000 in). Pine wood is medium-heavy (500 kg/m³), medium-hard (Janka hardness: 300), and very strong (12,000 N/mm2). These properties highlight the suitability of this veneer to effectively support the dynamics and power of the Legacy Carbon (in addition to the Carbon fibers), allowing extremely fast attacks.
Another very positive feature of this table tennis blade is its great handling, which is achieved by the ergonomical handle. The handle was manufactured by means of a 3D design resulting in a better usability on both sides (forehand and backhand). Also, the lenses within the handle fulfill an important use: They contribute to an optimized weight distribution.
