Joola table tennis robots – Our detailed test report

The topic series “table tennis robots” was started with an extensive test report on table tennis ball machines, which – admittedly – required much effort, but also resulted in a huge benefit for our readers. In order to provide a complete overview, we also provided a brand-specific test report comparing TT robots from Donic and Tibhar. In the today´s comparative test report we put our emphasis on Joola robots, probably the most common ping pong machines. This also includes the TT BUDDY series.

Joola Robots – The summary at first

All the Joola table tennis machines we compared in this test report are a great invention, and constitute a useful complement – no matter whether during training sessions, or during your leisure. In general, the training with table tennis robots has some advantages over the training with humans. On the other hand, however, you should note that TT robots can never fully replace a human table tennis player!

Joola Robots – particularly the TT Buddy series – are our concrete recommendation for price-conscious players and/or clubs. The most affordable Joola TT Buddy, the V100, is available for less than 100 Euro. Hence, this TT robot is the perfect companion for kids, or beginners.

All table tennis robots have in common that they need to be cleaned, cared, and maintained on a regular basis. This guarantees a good reliability, precision, and functionality for as long as possible. Below you can find the summary table showing our rankings of the table tennis robots we tested:

ALL JOOLA TABLE TENNIS ROBOTS AT A GLANCE – RIGHT HERE IN OUR TT SHOP

Prior to putting the emphasis on the comparison of our Joola ping pong robots, we want to provide you some basic information about table tennis robots. There are some features which all TT robots have in common: They constitute sports equipments either placed on top of the table, or behind the table, and they are designed to automatically serve / eject balls toward the other half of the table (according to the settings you are selecting at the control unit). Depending on the robot model, many different adjustments are possible (e.g. target, speed, type of spin, ejection frequency, etc.).

Similarly, also Joola robots are made of certain core elements. These include, for example, the control unit (important to handle and adjust the whole ball machine), head (ejects the balls), and a ball bowl / ball container.

The pros and cons, and the reasons as to why we might recommend a certain model (and not another), are summarized and presented below in our test report on Joola TT robots. Keep reading, it is worth it!

Regardless of the fact that the most important information are already presented in the table above, of course we will give you an extensive explanation for our ranking, and why we judged the Joola Shorty as being the best Joola robot.

Our test report is structured as follows:

Joola Robots – What are the pros and cons?

Joola table tennis robots provide many advantages, but also some limitations you should be aware of. As already mentioned, please always keep in mind that table tennis robots (a.k.a. ping pong machines) can never fully replace a real human table tennis player! It is important to correctly see, learn, and interpret the movements of your (human) opponent (e.g. to appropriately judge the amount of incoming spin so that an adequate motor response is induced). This important aspect is completely missing when training with table tennis robots / machines: The spin will always be pre-programmed, and you do not need to learn to assess the amount of spin. Also, the intensity of spin (and other parameters) is quite the same.

Additionally, the Joola robots from our test report are not capable of generating such a diverse variety of spin types and intensities as a human player can generate. If, however, you are well aware of these limitations, there is nothing bad or detrimental about robot training. In the end, TT robots also exhibit many advantages: The automation makes the ball bucket training unnecessary. This is now done by the robot. Coaches have significantly more time to intensively watch and analyze the player. Another advantage is that you can intensively train your leg work using a ping pong machine. Also robots that might not fully comply with the demands of advanced or professional players have, of course, their right to exist. For example, they are much appreciated by kids, beginners, or hobby table tennis players.

Test results of the comparison of the Joola table tennis robots

Below you can see our ranking of the Joola table tennis robots we have tested. The following 4 robots were included:

  • Joola Shorty: The test winner! Due to its good overall quality, the Shorty is also suitable for higher-level purposes.
  • TT Buddy V 300: The second place! You can choose between topspin and backspin balls, with different intensity levels.
  • TT Buddy V 200: The third place! Topspin and backspin balls in one single intensity level.
  • TT Buddy V 100: The fourth place, but also the most inexpensive TT robot! Only topspin balls possible.

First place: Joola Shorty

Joola TT robot ShortyThe first place of our test report goes to the Joola Shorty! It is true that this TT machine is more expensive compared to the other 3 robots. But the Shorty has a clearly superior overall quality and functionality. This includes its very good precision of the ejected balls, and the broader range of possible adjustments / settings. In this regard, you can adjust the trajectory, choose from 8 different ball speeds, various scattering angles, 9 ball ejection frequencies (range: 25-85 balls/min), and 8 spin types (topspin, backspin, and combinations of side-spin). These are not the only positive aspects: You can choose between direct and indirect balls, and there is an oscillation function available.

Many of the above mentioned settings can be set via a remote control. The ball capacity of the Joola Shorty is 150 balls, this is really good! Both the assembly and disassembly go off the hand very easily, and quickly. You only need to put the ball container on top of the robot, and screw it on (including the ball mixing rod). The Joola Shorty is a TT robot best suitable not only for beginners, but also for advanced players.

Second place: Joola TT Buddy V300

Joola robot TT Buddy V300In our comparison of Joola ball machines the second place goes to the Joola TT Buddy V300. This TT robot primarily captivates with its quite low acquisition costs. This, however, affects its variety of settings in a negative manner. The ball ejection frequency is only selectable between 20 and 70 balls/min. The spin versions (5 levels) are only related to topspin (2 intensities), and backspin (no sidespin). The ejection speed of this TT robot, however, is quite high. This might be more or less problematic for beginners. In this regard, another “drawback” of the V300 is its relatively low precision of the balls. Balls occasionally may get stuck, too.

But there are also positive aspects: The Joola TT Buddy V300 has an oscillation function, and a remote control to do settings. Furthermore, the V300 is very quick and easy in terms of its assembly / disassembly. The low weight of this TT machine makes it very handy, and easy to transport. The ball capacity is 100 balls, which is ok.

All in all, the Joola TT Buddy V300 has its limitations and problems, but considering its relatively low price, it is still a good recommendation for beginners, and/or hobby players.

THE TT BUDDY V300 IN DETAIL

Third place: Joola TT Buddy V200

Joola Buddy V200The third place of our Joola TT robot test goes to the Joola TT Buddy V200. This model is even cheaper than the Joola TT Buddy V300, however, this is at the expense of adjustment possibilities: The topspin is only available with one intensity level (similarly to the V300, there is topspin and backspin!). Also, there is no oscillation function anymore, and the speeds of the ejected balls are not stepwise adjustable.

The positive aspects as being present in the V300 (ball capacity, easy and quick assembly/disassembly, low weight) are also present in the V200 table tennis robot. Unfortunately, this is also true for the negative aspects (ball may get stuck occasionally, low precision).

But still, the Joola TT Buddy V200 has its right to exist, and is worth a recommendation for pure table tennis beginners, or recreational activities. Considering its low price, you will have a lot of fun (e.g. at birthday parties, during your leisure, etc.).

Fourth place: Joola TT Buddy V100

Joola ball machine TT Buddy V100The fourth and last place goes to the Joola TT Buddy V100. Within our Joola robot test report, the V100 is the cheapest model. However, its low price makes many settings simply disappear: Only topspin balls are available (no backspin). Similarly to the V200, the V100 does not provide an oscillation function. Also the poor ball precision, and the fact that balls occasionally may get stuck are weak spots of this ping pong machine.

However, the ball ejection frequency is still adjustable, and also the assembly and disassembly go off the hand very quickly and easily. The ball capacity is 100 balls, this is ok.

Still, the Joola TT Buddy V100 is only suitable for the hobby and recreational sector (e.g. child´s birthday parties, private usage at home, etc.). Using the V100 table tennis robot in a club, even though for beginners only, has a quite limited role in our opinion.

Concluding and final tips around Joola TT robots

Now that we haveallocated all the rankings in our Joola table tennis robot comparison, we want to provide you some hints around the topic table tennis robots. Also all Joola robots should be cleaned, maintained, and cared on a regular basis. For this, we want to give you some easy and basic tips along the way. These include e.g. the conveying elements, the wheels and rolls, the ball container, or the head.

It is important to clean these elements from time to time. Dirt and other foreign particles may lead to detrimental effects, causing the balls to get stuck, exhibit a poor precision, and negatively affect the durability of the TT robots. This is particularly important for the balls! If they get dirty (e.g. by touching the dirty floor), the dirt will stick on the ball, and the ball transports the dirt into the robot limiting its functionality. Hence, regularly cleaning the balls is essential.

In this regard, we recommend you to use a ball collection net. It prevents that the majority of the balls touch the dirty ground. Please also make sure you have enough balls. By the way: Also tables get dirty, keep them clean, too! In case a ball may get stuck in the robot, never hit your robot! This could cause permanent damage.

With these simple tips provided above, you will enjoy your Joola table tennis ball machine for a long time! The team of TT-Shop.com wishes you lots of fun!
