After a brief summary of the most important test results, we will provide detailed information regarding each of our Robo Pong table tennis robots.

Conclusion on our Donic Newgy Robo Pong product family

All Donic robots compared in our test report are a nice complement to the daily training, are all of high quality, and usability. In particular, the ball machine equipped with an automated ball return system (the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055), even enables non-stop action. This further trains your endurance, leg work, and promotes the improvement & deepening of various techniques. Taking together all the criteria, the Robo Pong 2055 is our final test winner! But also the other robots within the Robo Pong series which are not equipped with an automated ball return system – such as the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545 – are a great complement to your training, and offer many new possibilities. Especially, we want to emphasize the benefit of the available upgrade kits (or conversion kits) in case you are still using older table tennis robots. If you also consider to appropriately care and maintain your robot, you will have much fun and success for a very long time!

Among all table tennis robots, the Robo Pong series is THE recommendation from TT-Shop.com. For both categories – analog and digital – and all table tennis robots, the Robo Pong ping pong machines correspond to the TEST WINNERS in terms of the PRICE-PERFORMANCE RATIO.

Donic Newgy Robo Pong robots – Basics

Prior to telling you about our comparison of the Donic robots, we would like to provide some basic information regarding the overall topic of table tennis robots. Of course, these information also applies to Robo Pong ping pong machines. These are sports equipments placed either behind or – in most cases – on top of the table. After doing the desired settings at the control unit, table tennis robots (or machines) automatically serve balls toward the player. According to the type of TT robot you are using, there are different possible settings (e.g. ball targets, placements, speed, spin types, ejection frequency, etc.).

Also the table tennis robots from the house of Donic consist of various important core elements. These are, for example: The control unit (necessary for the overall operation of the robot), head (ejects the balls), and the ball container. The table tennis machines equipped with an automated ball return system also have a ball collection net (as standard), which collects the balls and directs them toward the ball funnel. From the funnel, the balls are then directed toward the inner of the robot, and – finally – toward the head which ejects the balls again. This enables a non-stop action. Furthermore, sometimes there are so called upgrade (or conversion) kits available for Donic robots. These allow you to upgrade your older table tennis machines (in case you are still using one). What pros and cons there are, and why we might recommend a certain and not another model, will be explained in our Robo Pong test report. Keep reading to learn all this!

Advantages and disadvantages of the Donic ball machines

Donic ping pong robots offer many useful advantages. However, one should be aware of the fact that table tennis robots also exhibit certain disadvantages: In general, they can never fully replace a human player!

Note that when training, it is important to see and carefully watch the arm movements of your training partner or opponent. This is an important process because based on this movement, you can judge e.g. the type and amount of incoming spin. As you can imagine, when training with TT robots, this process is not present anymore. The spin-specific information are pre-programmed, and there is no other possibility to assess the amount of spin. Although there are some possibilities (e.g. bi-colored balls which allow you to better judge the amount of spin; or indirect balls which first touch the half of the table on which the robot is placed: a better assessment of spin is possible, too), there will always be a huge difference between this scenario, and actually playing with a human player (using uni-colored balls). Another disadvantage of table tennis ball machines is that they cannot fully duplicate / generate such a wide variety of spin types, intensities, and other nuances as a human player.

If you are well aware of these disadvantages, then there is nothing bad about robot training. In the end, there are also several advantages associated with the robot training.

Due to the automation of many processes induced by the TT robot, a ball bucket training is not necessary anymore. This is now the job of your table tennis machine. Hence, coaches have significantly more time to actually watch, study, and correct the player. On the other hand, the coach him/herself can now play with the robot: In this case, the exercising player has now time to carefully watch the coach. The coach can demonstrate correct as well as incorrect techniques. Another advantage is that you can intensively train your leg work when using ping pong machines. In case the robot you are using is equipped with an automated ball return system, you can even train harder, and for way longer periods of time (without interruptions)!

The test of our Donic table tennis robots – Rankings

Below you can see our detailed ranking of our Donic table tennis robots. For this test, the following four robots were included:

  • Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545: This TT robot is very inexpensive, however, is works analogously, and there is no automated ball return system.
  • Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055: Technically identical to our test winner, however, without automated ball return system and net to collect balls.
  • Donic Newgy Robo Pong 3050XL: THE high-end table tennis ball machine! Tomorrow´s technology already today!
  • Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055: Our price-performance winner. This robot is also the number one of all the table tennis robots we have tested!

First place: Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055

Donic robot Robo Pong 2055The Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055 – A performance à la bonne heure! We really could not find a better description for this table tennis robot, which deserved to be first in our test report. In contrast to its predecessor robot (the 2050), the 2055 is more powerful, and better. A new control unit (including changed electronics, new firmware as well as software) makes the Robo Pong 2055 more precise, more reliable, and faster. Since the 2055 is equipped with an automated ball return system (for non-stop action) including a ball collection net (as standard!), its price is really good. In comparison, many other brands which are also equipped with an automated ball return system are more expensive. Good overall quality, easy handling and operation, a wide range of useful settings, and a fair price – these are the properties that best describe the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055. In detail, this means: Digital control of the ball speed (up to 120 km/h!), available at 30 different speed levels. You can also adjust the intervals, whereas a ball ejection frequency of up to 170 balls per minute is possible! Furthermore, there are 21 oscillation positions, whilst the head of this TT robot exhibits 13 different inclination angles. Of course, the Robo Pong 2055 can also vary other ball properties, like spin. You can select from topspin, backspin, sidespin, counter, serve, and chopped balls. Within the exercise / drill mode, there are 64 pre-programmed exercises. However, you can also compile exercises by yourself! The menu navigation of the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055 is simple, and easy to understand. You can select from different languages, too! The ball capacity of this table tennis machine is approx. 120 balls. Assembly and disassembly go off the hand not only quickly, but also easily. Its overall weight is approx. 8 kg. This is not very light, but also not too heavy. Please also note that -due to its weight- once this TT machine is placed correctly, it stands in a firm and secure manner, without jerking movements. Because of the many possible adjustments and levels, the Robo Pong 2055 provides suitable settings for beginners, advanced players, and pros! In our opinion, this ping pong robot is worth a real recommendation! In case the price might still be too high for you (and provided you can play without the automated ball return system), we recommend you the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055. The 1055 is also a great TT robot!

Second place: Donic Newgy Robo Pong 3050XL

To be honest, making this decision was really hard! In the end, we decided to rank the 3050XL at the second position. The good ranking (second place) was achieved by this TT robot because it has an automated ball return system (the 1055 is close behind, reaching the third place). The Donic Newgy Robo Pong 3050 XL is currently the largest and most powerful weapon Donic has to offer. Tomorrow´s table tennis training and technology already today, this is possible with this ball machine! The 3050XL is the further development of the already powerful Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055, and the 3050 XL convinces all along the line: A new and fancy design, an even more user-friendly operation via app and tablet, and very realistic gaming properties when playing. Of course, all this high-tech has its price. This is the main reason, as to why we did not rank the Robo Pong 3050 XL at the very top (we assessed the price-performance ratio). However, if the financial aspect is no big deal for you, this table tennis robot is probably the best possible choice! The 3050 XL can do, what other ping pong machines can´t. In addition to its fancy design, we would like to mention the new and innovative operation and handling. Instead of normal keys, this is now achieved using the Newgy app (iOS or Android) via your smartphone, or tablet (simply via bluetooth). The navigation menu is very structured, and easily as well as quickly. The functions and settings of this TT robot are just incredible, and adjustable via screen: The speed of the ball, oscillation positions, types and amount of spin, ball ejection frequencies, etc. You can also select from more than 100 (!) pre-programmed drills / exercises. You can even compile your own exercises. Of course, the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 3050XL has a fully automated rotating head, and two ball ejection rolls (double). This allows the robot to serve different types of spin, regardless of the ball ejection speed. As a consequence, the 3050 XL has an improved precision of the served balls, and a significantly reduced time to reach specific targets making variational and quick training sessions possible. Lights located at the robot provide feedback regarding the kind and intensity of spin, and these lights make a signal in case certain settings are impossible. This is a new feature! In terms of the materials used and the workmanship, Donic sets new standards. Taking into account this, plus the intelligent and high-quality electronics, we can say that the Robo Pong 3050XL is a very reliable TT robot. Finally, we want to emphasize that the 3050XL is capable of generating very realistic and close-to-the-game-like feelings when playing with this table tennis machine, almost like a human training partner. This is really incredible! Still, the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 3050XL is easily and quickly assembled / disassembled. Hence, this TT robot is worth a real recommendation, whereas this is not only true for pros and advanced players, but also for beginners (since there are so many different settings, from easy to high levels).

In case you do not need such high-tech (and/or in case the 3050XL is too expensive), we recommend you the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055 which is also equipped with an automated ball return system. In case you don´t need an automated ball return system, TT-Shop.com recommends you to check out the Robo Pong 1055 (see directly below).

Third place: Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055

Donic robot Robo Pong 1055Within our Donic table tennis robot test report, the third place goes to the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055. In contrast to its predecessor model, the Robo Pong 1050, the 1055 is equipped with new electronics of the control unit, and new firmware and software. All these changes significantly increase the reliability of the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055. In addition, the 1055 is also faster than its predecessor model. Actually, the Robo Pong 1055 is – just like the 2055 – also a winner, and the first place would also be ok. This is because technically, the 1055 is completely identical to the 2055, except that the former table tennis machine is not equipped with an automated ball return system (no net to collect balls, too). This, however, leads to lower acquisition costs of the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055 table tennis robot.

So in case you can do without these two features, you want to save money, but you don´t want to make compromises in terms of quality and settings – then the third place would probably be your first choice. The 1055 weighs approx. 4.5 kg (being lighter than the 2055), and is very quickly and easily assembled/disassembled. The operation of this ping pong machine is similarly easy to understand, and quick.

As already mentioned, the technical details of Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055 are exactly the same as its big brother´s: 21 oscillating positions, 13 inclination angles, 30 different ball speeds (up to 120 km/h), adjustable ball intervals (ball frequency up to 170 balls/minute), various ball & spin settings (topspin, backspin, sidespin, counter, serve, chopped balls), and 64 pre-programmed exercises / drills. You can also set you own individual exercises.

Although the Robo Pong 1055 is a TT robot without an automated ball return system (no non-stop action), its ball capacity is 200 balls, which is really great! Very practical and handy: You can use an upgrade kit (also known as conversion kit) for the 1055 to upgrade this table tennis robot to the 2055 (for more information on this, please see further below). Due to its manifold settings and adjustments, we truly believe that the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055 is a TT robot not only suitable for advanced or pro table tennis players, but also for beginners. Hence, this high-quality robot is worth a real recommendation!

Fourth place: Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545

Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545The fourth place of our Donic TT robot test report goes to the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545. Although the fourth place is the last place, the 545 is not a bad robot at all! This ball machine is the revised version of its predecessor robot, the Robo Pong 540. For the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545, the control unit was revised, and the AIM function was implemented:

This allows to manually set various settings of the head of this robot. The balls can now be served toward three different positions, such as backhand, forehand, or the middle region. Although the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545 is known as being “solely” Donic´s entry-level model, its properties, functions, and quality convince all along the line! The 545 also captivates by its low acquisition costs. As you can imagine, this happens at slight expenses of settings and adjustments. For example, the ball speed is only available at two levels (15 and approx. 115 km/h), the ball ejection frequencies are available for 13 – 63 balls/min. In terms of the spin, you can (“only”) select between topspin, backspin, and sidespin. Still, this table tennis robot is solid, precise, and robust!

The operation of the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545 is easy, and you simply place this ping pong machine on top of the table. Some facts which might appear a bit detrimental are only marginal, and mainly explained by the low price of this table tennis robot. In this context, it is obvious that the 545 does not have an automated ball return system. Hence, this is not really a disadvantage. Sidespin and backspin balls exhibit a quite high spin intensity, whereas topspin balls do not. However, you´ll get used to this pretty quickly.

To summarize, the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 545 is a TT robot which is characterized by a low price, a good overall quality, and useful settings (considering its low price level). Hence, we can truly recommend this robot for beginners, and advanced players.

Donic Newgy Robo Pong upgrade kit

You are still using the “old / older” analog ping pong robots? This is not a problem at all! Donic offers a so called upgrade (or conversion) kit. This allows you to digitalize the analog predecessor models (e.g. the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2000, or the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2040) in a very short time (only a few minutes). This digital upgrade kit contains a ball ejection head, a digital control unit including mount, a connection cable, and -of course- the operation instructions for the device to which you are upgrading (e.g. the Donic Newgy Robo Pong 2055). You can see that the conversion kit (or upgrade kit) is an inexpensive alternative to enable the transition to the “digital age”.

By the way: Using the appropriate upgrade kit, you can also upgrade your Donic Newgy Robo Pong 1055 table tennis robots to the Robo Pong 2055. This only takes a few minutes! So in case you are still using the 1050, don´t panic! The conversion kit is installed in an easy and quick way. This actually only includes the fixing of the wing screws. The conversion kit Donic Newgy Robo Pong also allows you to use both, the old 38 mm and the new 40 mm (diameter) table tennis balls.

Final tips for all Donic robots

Now that we’ve given away all the places and rankings in our Donic robot comparison, we´d like to mention that it is importance to keep in mind some basic tips around the topic table tennis robots. Also all Donic TT robots must be cared and maintained from time to time (but on a regular basis). In this regard, we would like to give you some easy hints along the way. These include e.g. ball conveying elements (wheels, rolls, etc.), the head, ball containers, and so forth. You should clean and maintain them from time to time. Dirt in or at these parts may result in a lower precision and durability of your Donic ping pong machine, and may even cause that balls get stuck.

Of course, the same is also true for table tennis balls. If they have contact to dirt and other foreign particles (e.g. at the floor/ground), then the dirt sticks to the balls, and these transport the dirt into the robot limiting its functionality. For these reasons, make sure to regularly clean the balls, too!

Hint: We recommend you to additionally buy a net to collect the balls (if not already standard). These ball collection nets prevent that the majority of the balls touches the ground. Please make also sure that you have enough balls. By the way: It is also important to keep the table clean, too. Also tables get dirty over the time. In the case that a ball actually gets stuck in the robot, never hit your TT machine! This may lead to a permanent damage.

Considering these simple hints, we are pretty sure that you will enjoy your Donic table tennis robot for a very long time! Have fun!
